What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin shells that are placed and cemented to the front surface of your tooth, thus covering any dental problems that might be affecting your smile. The veneers are custom-designed based on your teeth impression, which helps to restore the full form of your teeth. The veneers are made from tooth-colored materials, with porcelain being the oldest and most popular choice. However, other materials such as composite resin and ceramics can also be used.
What to Expect During a Dental Veneer Procedure?
The dental veneer installation procedure is a process that can take two or more visits. Below is a look at what to expect from the start (consultation) to the finish (installation of the veneers).
Diagnosis and Procedure Planning
During the initial consultation, the affected teeth will be evaluated, and the diagnosis used to determine if veneers or other dental restoration/cosmetic procedure is appropriate. If the dental veneers procedure is confirmed, treatment preparation will begin. This usually includes taking dental images and creating an impression of your teeth.
Before veneers can be placed, your teeth are prepared to allow for perfect placement. The preparation involves removing damaged parts - in the event of tooth decay - and reducing the surface of your affected teeth (by removing part of the enamel). The amount of the enamel removed is approximately similar to the thickness of the veneers. This helps to ensure that your teeth retain roughly the same size after placing the veneers.
Placement of a Temporary Veneer
After preparing your tooth, the impression taken will then be sent to the lab for fabrication of a custom veneer. However, since this usually takes weeks, a temporary veneer can be placed on the prepared tooth, to protect it from damage, and to help restore some form to it.
Custom Veneer Installation
Once the custom veneer is ready, you can return for the final part of the treatment - its installation. This usually starts by temporarily placing the veneer to ensure that it fits perfectly. In case there are any issues, the veneer can be adjusted (resized) for a perfect fit. The damaged teeth are then cleaned, polished, and etched to guarantee the perfect cementing of the veneers.
After this, a bonding material is applied to the veneer, which is then placed on the surface of the tooth. A special light (laser or UV light) is then directed towards the tooth to activate the bonding material, which helps to accelerate the bonding process.
Once the bonding is completed, any excess bonding material is removed. Your biting force is then evaluated to ensure that there are no complications with the veneers.
