Periodontal Maintenance

Man flossing to prevent gum disease

Maintaining the Results of Your Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is a serious dental health issue, which is characterized by a bacterial infection in the gums. The infection in the gums can spread further, affecting the jawbone, and thus compromising the support system of your teeth. Fortunately, there are several treatment solutions that help to control the condition and remedy the damage to the gums, jawbone, and teeth. However, after these treatments, ongoing maintenance is required to ensure that the infection does not recur, which can easily happen if you disregard your oral health. At Dublin Family Dental we offer periodontal maintenance services, which are guaranteed to ensure that your oral health remains at an optimal level.

Why is Periodontal Maintenance Important?

Periodontal maintenance basically refers to various oral health care measures, which are taken to ensure that periodontal disease does not recur. This is achieved by keeping bacterial infection at bay. The maintenance care, however, also offers several other benefits, in addition to keeping the disease away. These benefits include:
•  Protecting your teeth - by keeping bacterial infection away, periodontal maintenance also helps to protect your teeth from an infection, which could lead to decay, cavities, and ultimately, tooth loss.
•  A fresher breath - the bacteria found in your mouth interacts with food particles to produce an awful stench, bad breath. Getting rid of these bacteria, which is what periodontal maintenance offers, helps to ensure that you have fresher breath.
•  Maintaining your facial appearance - periodontal maintenance helps to ensure that your oral health status remains at a peak level. This helps to keep several dental problems at bay, including ones that could lead to cosmetic flaws.

What Does Periodontal Maintenance Involve?

Periodontal maintenance is a regular and ongoing treatment process. It usually involves a dental examination to assess your oral health condition to detect whether or not the disease (bacterial infection) has recurred. On top of that, the maintenance usually involves various dental oral hygiene solutions aimed at getting rid of oral bacteria that could lead to an infection. These solutions include:
•  Dental cleaning - dental cleaning is used to get rid of any dental plaque and tartar that has built up on the surface of the teeth.
•  Scaling and root planing - also known as deep cleaning, this involves removing the plaque and tartar found below the gumline, on the roots of the teeth. This is done by scaling the roots (scraping plaque and tartar) and polishing them (root planing) to give them a smooth surface that will be hard for the plaque and tartar to attach to.

Aside from these dental solutions, periodontal maintenance also includes at-home oral hygiene care practices such as:
•  Brushing your teeth regularly.
•  Regular flossing.
•  Rinsing using a mouthwash.

During your routine dental visits for the periodontal maintenance treatment, the dentist will discuss with you these home oral hygiene practices. Other measures you need to observe to ensure that the disease does not recur will also be examined.

Periodontal treatments can help to restore your oral health, and consequently, your smile. However, periodontal maintenance therapy is required to maintain the results of these treatments, which is what we offer you at Dublin Family Dental.
