Complete and Partial Dentures
Restoring Your Oral Function and Appearance Using Dentures
Tooth loss is a dental problem that affects millions of people. It usually occurs due to poor oral hygiene - resulting in decay and infection - or due to a dental injury, grinding and clenching (bruxism), a systemic condition, medications, or several other reasons. However, whatever the reason for tooth loss is, it leaves a space in your mouth, something that can have a considerable effect on your appearance, as well as dental health status. As a result, it is a good idea to replace the missing tooth/teeth. At Dublin Family Dental, we offer several solutions for missing teeth, top among them being dentures.
Dentures as a Solution for Missing or Damaged Teeth
Dentures are dental prosthetic devices that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They feature a denture base, which holds the artificial teeth used to replace the missing ones. Dentures are designed to mimic the look and functioning of the natural teeth, which is done by using natural-looking materials: pink-colored acrylic or plastic for the denture base and ceramic, porcelain, or plastic for the teeth. The shape and size of the denture base and the teeth can also be customized to offer a more natural look and feel.
Dentures are one of the top tooth replacement solutions, mostly preferred by people due to their affordability and the quick treatment period when it comes to getting dentures. They are also one of the earliest solutions, having been used as far back as 700 B.C.
Types of Dentures
Dentures can be categorized into two main types:
Also known as full dentures, these are used when you have experienced complete tooth loss in either the upper, lower or both jaws. They feature a denture base that is designed to fit over your entire ridge and a complete set of artificial teeth. These dentures can either be standard - not designed for a specific person - or custom-fit - designed to fit you perfectly based on your dental features.
Complete dentures are usually removable, which allows you to remove them for cleaning or when sleeping. When wearing them, they are held in place by an adhesive or a suction mechanism. However, some full dentures are permanent, where they are fixed into place using dental implants (implant-supported dentures).
Partial dentures are used to replace one or more teeth, but when some of your natural teeth are still intact. They feature a denture base, which is designed to fit into the empty part of your jawbone. It also comes with the specific number of artificial teeth that are needed to replace the lost ones.
Partial dentures are usually fixed by snapping them onto the adjacent natural teeth using metal clips/clasps. Implants can also be used to support the partial dentures. However, there are also removable partials, which are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth, until other permanent solutions are sought.
